Hi book club members,
We are excited for the new month of October bringing slightly cooler weather for us Floridians, making it the perfect time to snuggle up in your favorite blanket and read the next Mayor Buddy’s Book Club selection. Recently, The Maze Runner movie version hit theaters and we thought now would be a great time to revisit this MBBC classic!
We have about six weeks to finish reading this book (not including Thanksgiving Break) before our next End of Book Party on December 3rd. Come back to the blog periodically for activities related to The Maze Runner.
Our next End of Book Party for the City of Ember is coming soon! We hope you can join us as we celebrate finishing our 25th book.
When: October 8th from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Where: The Orlando Public Library
(101 E. Central Blvd. Orlando, FL 32801)
Test your knowledge about The City of Ember in a trivia game with your friends. There will also be crafts, games, food and prizes!
The City of Ember’s fate depends on the teamwork between Lina and Doon and their ability to come up with a plan to save their friends and family!
This week’s activity is to compare and contrast Lina and Doon’s character traits using a Venn Diagram
When you’re doing the Venn Diagram, reflect on these differences and similarities and ask yourself why their personalities work together to help the City find a solution to their problems.
Did you hear the news?
A Wrinkle in Time is in the works to be on the big screen in the near future. Check out the article below for more information and comment below if you are excited about the Frozen director taking on this Mayor Buddy’s Book Club selection.

Hey Mayor Buddy’s Book Club members,
We hope you’re enjoying The City of Ember so far! As you’ve probably read, the children in the City of Ember get their job titles on Assignment Day. This is the day a citizen in the City of Ember learns their destiny for the next three years – good or bad.
Imagine you are in class with Lina and Doon on Assignment Day and had to pick a job from Mayor Cole’s bag.
Step 1: Choose a job title from the following
- Pipeworks Laborer
- Supply Depot clerk
- Electrician’s helper
- Greenhouse helper
- Timekeeper’s assistant
- Trash Sifter
- Mold Scraper
- Building Repair assistant
Step 2: Write a letter to Mayor Cole explaining if you like your job assignment or not.
Step 3: Mail it to us!
Have your parents help you mail it to our office and the best five letters will be featured in our upcoming blog posts!
